Yamakage Ukyo
Feudal lord living in the capital. He is afraid of his shrewish wife. Smitten with the courtesan Hanago, he develops an elaborate scheme to sneak out to meet her without his wife’s knowledge.
Tamanoi
Ukyo’s wife. She loves him and keeps him on a short leash, not wanting to be apart even for a short time. But she shows another side when she is betrayed.
Taro Kaja
Ukyo’s servant. He reluctantly accepts Ukyo’s order to sit in meditation in his place.
Chieda and Saeda
Both are faithful servants of Tamanoi.
