Princess Yuki
A granddaughter of renowned painter Sesshu and herself a painter. She seeks her father’s enemy alongside her husband, but is captured by Daizen and tied tightly to a large cherry tree.
Matsunaga Daizen
A villain aiming to overthrow the government and conquer the nation. He murders his master, and kills Yuki’s father to obtain a treasured sword. He masterminds a rebellion and takes shelter in the Golden Pavilion.
Konoshita Tokichi
Vassal of the shogun. He plots to rescue the shogun’s mother by pretending to switch his loyalty to Daizen.
Naonobu
Princess Yuki’s husband and a talented painter. He helps his wife search for her father’s killer, but is captured by Daizen and threatened with a death sentence.
Keiju-in
Mother of the shogun and a Buddhist priestess. Princess Yuki previously served as her chambermaid. She is imprisoned by Daizen in the Golden Pavilion.
Matsunaga Kitouda
Daizen’s younger brother. Nicknamed Red Face due to his short temper. He joins his older brother in the raid on the Imperial Palace.
Sogo Gunpei
Raised by Tokichi, he enters Daizen’s service in disguise as a servant in hopes of bringing down the villain.
Tachibana
Princess Yuki’s older sister, who features in but does not appear in this act. She becomes a courtesan after her father’s murder and is eventually accepted as the shogun’s concubine. Due to Daizen’s scheming, she accidentally kills the shogun and eventually commits suicide.
