Overview |
A masterpiece domestic drama known commonly as “Otomi Yosaburo” after the two main characters or “Kirare Yosa” (Scarface Yosa). It is reportedly based on the experience of Yoshimura Isaburo IV, a nagauta singer in the late Edo Period. It was originally a long play of nine acts and 18 scenes, but today usually only one scene from Act III or the concluding section is performed. Genjidana is originally Genyadana, a name given after the residence of Okamoto Genya, a doctor to the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The shop was located in Tokyo’s present-day Ningyocho, an area which at that time was a smart section appropriate to a mistress’s home. |
